The Friday Files - news to inspire and inform
Our inspiration this week comes from Canada-UK Foundation scholar Eleanor Dunling. Dr. Dunling is a perfect example of how women are bringing unique and creative approaches to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Eleanor completed her PhD in experimental nuclear physics with the Department of Physics at the University of York and is now based at world-leading TRIUMF Lab in Vancouver.
Known globally as an important research innovator, Vancouver's TRIUMF is possibly best known for its role in developing the Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS detector at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. These developments led to the discovery of the long-theorized Higgs boson, the particle which gives all other particles their mass. We applaud the progress Eleanor has made, and we challenge others to follow in her footsteps.
Statistics Canada reports that in 2016 more women graduated with degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) than ever before. In fact, a higher percentage of women are graduating with university degrees than their male counterparts. Though more women are accessing higher education, there’s still work to be done. STEM is still a male-dominated area. University-educated women are still less likely to choose a STEM major over other fields such as social sciences or business.
Show your support for women in STEM by sharing news of Eleanor's accomplishments on your own social media! Help more women, especially younger women, see Eleanor as a positive role model and envisage themselves in a similar success. Thank you!

In the spotlight this week is Canada-UK Foundation Academic Director Hasna Bloore. Moroccan-born, Hasna was educated at both McGill University and at University of London, where she received a Graduate Diploma in Law. Before joining the Foundation, Hasna served for seven years as Academic Relations Officer with the High Commission of Canada in London, acquiring a network of academic collaborators across both Canada and the United Kingdom. Her in-depth knowledge of the academic landscape is an enormous asset to our work, including building collaborations, making informed choices on grants and awards, and adapting our academic and strategic priorities to meet ongoing challenges of a rapidly-changing environment. Hasna is an avid athlete, devoted wife and mother, and a keen observer of both Canadian and UK arts and culture. You are warmly welcomed to reach out to Hasna for discussion on issues of mutual interest.
