Canada-UK Foundation and Eccles Centre Canadian Fellowship

We are delighted to report that we had an outstanding field of applications for the 2022 Canada-UK Foundation and the Eccles Centre for American Studies Fellowships. The 2022 Fellowships were award to Dr. Allan Greer, Emeritus Professor and Canada Research Chair in Colonial North America in the Department of History at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and Dr. Jane McGaughey, Associate Professor and Johnson Chair of Quebec and Canadian Studies in the School of Irish Studies at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. Details of their research are available in our newsletter, available here.

These Fellowships – funded by ourselves and managed by the Centre – will support two researchers to use the Canadian collections of the British Library. The funding is intended to cover flights, accommodation and research time at the Library.

WHO IS THIS FELLOWSHIP FOR?

For 2023, we are keen to hear from all kinds of serious researchers who are based in Canada and working on projects in Canadian studies, including transnational or comparative approaches to Canadian studies. These researchers will have the potential to produce something new, exciting and challenging as a result of their engagement with the Canadian collections of the British Library.

The Fellowships are aimed equally at applicants from academic backgrounds working on scholarly research and creative practitioners working on artistic and cultural projects. This means that research towards a doctoral degree, an academic monograph or article, a poetry collection, a theatre production, a body of painting or sculpture, a new fashion collection … all these kinds of projects, and more, will be considered.

While applications on all subjects covered by the Library’s Canadian collections will be considered, please also note that the Eccles Centre operates a set of research priorities each year. These priorities are not exclusive; instead, they are intended to promote areas of strength in the Library’s collections. Currently, these research areas are as follows:

  • North American and Caribbean Indigenous Studies

  • Literary, theatrical and artistic connections in Canada, the Caribbean and the US

  • Book history and arts in North America

  • Pacific Ocean politics and geopolitics

  • Migration in/from/through Canada, the Caribbean and the US

  • LGBTQ cultures and histories in Canada, the Caribbean and the US

Please check back frequently for news of the 2024 application deadline, and for news of events and updates on the work of Dr. Greer and Dr. McCaughey.
